CHAPTER 13

Ryzen

Heading to a crime scene for a child victim, the last thing I expected was to deal with a bomb going off. I knew serial killers could attack if they felt backed into a corner, but that wasn’t what this felt like.

It felt personal, and personal toward Knox.

He had been a Profiler for close to fifteen years now, so he was bound to have enemies even without going into the field. I knew he’d had to testify against major felony criminals, all part of the job. Any one of them could be this killer.

Maybe the killings didn’t fit into a set box because they were designed to grab someone’s attention.

Maybe all our UnSub wanted was attention and what better way then to brutally kill a young teenager?

We all had more questions than answers at this point and we were getting nowhere.

I hated this feeling. I hated not being able to know who the target was so I could go after them. I wanted this to end. We needed it to end.

I knew the guys could handle hard cases. We had dealt with our fair share before this new Agency and since being a part of it. However, I wasn’t certain that Knox would be able to handle the weight of this case. It was already bad enough that this UnSub had been killing and torturing children. But now, he was targeting Knox, and he was also trying to kill anyone who was around him in the process.

If I hadn’t grabbed Knox when that bomb went off, the shrapnel could have killed him. I didn’t even think, I just reacted. All I knew was that I had to protect Knox from the hit. It didn’t even matter if it killed me, as long as it didn’t kill him.

How the hell had we gotten here?

How did I go from hating his guts and waiting for the day he finally got what he deserved, to this?

To me risking my own life just to protect him. To not caring if I died in the process. It was like he was some kind of Jedi and he’d somehow put me in this mind controlled state. I still wasn’t over the fact that I wanted him to kiss me.

That I wanted to kiss him.

I was still missing the warmth I'd felt when he was that close to me. I wanted to keep feeling it. All of this was insane and it made no sense. I didn’t know what the hell I was supposed to do with all of these uncertain emotions.

How the hell was I supposed to get through this case without constantly worrying about Knox’s safety and state of mind?

A sigh escaped my lips before I could tell my brain not to do it. My head hurt and the bright lights in the room were not helping. I had gotten so used to having dim lighting and my sunglasses that my eyes weren’t used to the brightness anymore.

It was hard to believe that I grew up in a hot and sunny country like Africa for so long.
